John Payne, Joint Principal Clarinet


John is one of the Brighton Philharmonic Orchestra’s two principal clarinets and has been playing regularly in the orchestra since 2009.  He is also Principal Clarinet with the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden which he joined at the age of 25, following a short period with the BBC Welsh Symphony Orchestra, and was appointed Principal in 1993.

During his career John has worked with the world’s most renowned conductors and singers and taken part in many notable performances, including such highlights as Der Ring des Nibelungen, Die Meistersinger and Parsifal with Bernard Haitink, Otello and La Bohème with Carlos Kleiber, and Der Rosenkavalier with Solti. He can also be heard playing the solos on many Royal Opera and Royal Ballet Cds and DVDs, such as Tosca, Meistersinger, Tristan and Isolde, Rosenkavalier, Sleeping Beauty, Coppelia etc. and has taken part in Royal Opera tours  to Japan, Korea, New York, Amsterdam, Rome, Paris, Finland and Germany.

John was a founder member of the Soloists of the Royal Opera House Orchestra and has also appeared as soloist with the orchestra in both the Mozart Clarinet Concerto and the Copland Concerto for the ballet Acheron’s Dream.
