A year after leaving the Royal Academy of Music Catherine joined Welsh National Opera as sub-principal bassoon. After a happy decade with them she returned to London to freelance and played with most of the big London orchestras.
Whilst playing with the Philharmonia she was enthralled by the playing of their then contra bassoon player, Nick Reader. It inspired her to take up the instrument and led to her present positions of contra bassoonist and sub-principal bassoon with English National Opera and principal contra bassoon with the Brighton Philharmonic, with whom she has been playing since 1992.
When she is not searching for the perfect reed she enjoys growing and cooking the food from her allotment, reading and catching up with television documentaries on a rare free evening.
