Ian Brignall previews the BPO’s NYE concert

“Vienna without Strauss is like Austria without the Danube.”

Hector Berlioz

The Brighton Phil’s Artistic Administrator Ian Brignall has filmed a short (under 5 minutes) preview of our New Year’s Eve Viennese Gala concert at Brighton Dome, which will be conducted by Richard Balcombe and features Ilona Domnich (soprano), looking particularly at the fascinating history of the Strauss dynasty.

For instance, did you know that Josef Strauss was for a while an engineer and designed a horse-drawn revolving-brush street-sweeping vehicle?

Or that Johann Strauss the Elder was originally apprenticed to a bookbinder? and was adamant that none of his sons should become musicians?
