Thomas Carroll Cello/Director
Prokofiev Symphony No.1 in D Major Op.25 (Classical)
Schumann Cello Concerto in A Minor Op.129
Mendelssohn Symphony No.3 Op.56 (Scottish)
For our opening concert of 2019 we welcome back the cellist and conductor Thomas Carroll, a very popular guest artist here in Brighton. Thomas is gaining a tremendous reputation as a conductor and here he brings us some of his favourite pieces in a delightfully tuneful programme.
Prokofiev’s Classical Symphony was written as an imitation of the symphonic writing of Haydn and, to a certain extent, Mozart; it is full of clever harmonic language with a sound that is classical, but also of its time. Since its first performance in 1918 it has become a real audience favourite.
Thomas will both perform and direct Schumann’s Cello Concerto – a deeply personal work that places huge technical demands on the soloist. Written in just two weeks it remained unperformed until 1860, four years after Schumann’s death. In the soulful second movement the soloist has a beautiful duet with the principal cellist, an unusual device often interpreted as a conversation between the composer and his wife Clara.
Mendelssohn’s Symphony No.3, the Scottish, has become synonymous with the rugged and romantic landscapes of the hills and crags of Scotland. It was completed in 1842 some 13 years after he was inspired to write it on a walking holiday in Scotland.

Ian Brignall, the orchestra’s Artistic Administrator, recently caught up with Thomas and filmed this fascinating chat (interspersed with illustrations by Thomas on the cello) about the music he will be conducting and performing. The video is just over 9 minutes long but well worth watching:
