John Ellwood was born in Skipton, Yorkshire, and studied at the Birmingham Conservatoire. After graduating from the Conservatoire, John was appointed Principal Trumpet with the Orquesta Sinfonica de Tenerife, a position he held for almost 10 years. On returning to London, John began working with London’s major orchestras including the RPO, LPO, Philharmonia, English National Opera and the Royal Ballet Sinfonia. He has been Principal Trumpet with the Brighton Philharmonic Orchestra for 12 years.
His varied career encompasses solo performances, chamber music, orchestral playing and teaching.
His favourite composers are Brahms and Richard Strauss. He also loves listening to film music, especially the MGM orchestra, finding the big orchestral scores really add to a film’s enjoyment
Aside from playing the trumpet he is a keep fit enthusiast and enjoys competing in triathlons.
