Clare Hoskins, Principal Cor-Anglais

Clare was born and brought up in Kent, where her orchestral skills and insatiable love of music were nurtured in the Kent County Youth Orchestra, The Corydon Singers and other local music ensembles.

Clare read music at Trinity College, Cambridge, where she was a choral exhibitioner. (She also won an oar, played old dame roles in Gilbert & Sullivan operettas, joined numerous orchestras, and found a husband.)

Having then trained and worked as a primary school teacher, Clare’s urge to play professionally became irresistible, and she left her teaching job to become a post-graduate student at the Royal Academy of Music. Here, she studied the oboe with Tess Miller, and the cor anglais with Christine Pendrill for two years.

Clare is now a freelance player, and has worked for many years with Glyndebourne Touring Opera, Garsington Opera and the Brighton Philharmonic Orchestra, as well as performing with English National Opera and the Oxford Philomusica. Clare also enjoys working as an extra player with the orchestra of the Royal Opera House, English National Opera, and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. She plays from time to time with the BBC Concert Orchestra, the City of London Sinfonia, the London Mozart Players and the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra.

Clare works regularly in schools, community centres, hospitals and hospices under the auspices of education and outreach programmes of Glyndebourne, the New Mozart Orchestra, Music in Hospitals and the Oxford Philomusica. She performs regularly for “Create”, an arts charity which sends musicians, storytellers, dancers and visual artists into schools, hospitals and prisons.

Clare is also a teacher at a local primary school, where she teaches class music for one day a week, conducts the school choir, and writes and directs musical shows for the children to perform. Clare teaches the oboe for Camden and Haringey Music Services, and coaches the oboes in the Haringey Young Musicians Symphony Orchestra.

Clare is also a member of the professional choir at St Marylebone Parish Church in Central London, where she has sung for over 25 years.

Clare is married to the conductor Paul Hoskins, and they live in Cricklewood, North West London with their three children: Dorothy, Mabel and Jess.
