Barry Wordsworth

Barry Wordsworth is the Music Director and Principal Conductor of the Brighton Philharmonic Orchestra, and also Principal Conductor of the BBC Concert Orchestra. One of Britain’s most sought-after artists, he makes frequent guest appearances with all the major orchestras in the country, including the London Philharmonic Orchestra, London Symphony Orchestra, Philharmonia, Hallé, City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra and Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra.

In 1989 he made his first televised appearance at the BBC Proms and has conducted at every Proms season since then including the famous 'Last Night'.

He is also in demand overseas, where he is a favourite guest conductor with orchestras through Europe and in Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Malasia. Over Christmas 2001 he conducts Prokofiev's 'Cinderella' in Japan with the Tokyo National Ballet, then in 2002 he conducts the BBC Concert Orchestra on two major foreign tours: in January the Fiftieth Anniversary Tour of the United States, and in November the BBCCO's second major tour to Japan.

Barry Wordsworth was Music Director of the Royal Ballet until 1995 and regularly conducts key productions with them and the Birmingham Royal Ballet, where he continues as Music Director.

In addition to his symphonic career, Barry Wordsworth has conducted opera at Covent Garden, including performances of Don Giovanni and Carmen.

He has a large catalogue of recordings for all the UK-based companies including Argo/Decca International with whom he has a long association. His recordings of Vaughan Williams' Job and Prokofiev's Romeo and Juliet with the Philharmonia on Collins Classics received excellent reviews. He has recorded four CDs with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in repertoire including Beethoven's Symphony No 7 and Rimsky Korsakov's Scheherazade. His recording of the Last Night of the Proms for Phillips Classics with the BBC Concert Orchestra has achieved enormous popular success, and a recent recording is John McCabe's Edward II with the Royal Ballet Sinfonia for Hyperion Records.

In 1996 he was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Letters from the University of Brighton for his contribution to music in the City.

The Brighton Philharmonic Orchestra is managed by the Brighton & Hove Philharmonic Society Ltd. Registered Charity No.250921.
