Guy’s Meditation on Gibbons 20th Fantasia started life as a string trio, in the same format as Gibbons’ original, in 2004, and was developed and expanded in 2005 for the Shellira String Quartet and in 2006 for the strings of Musicians of All Saints, before taking its final form in 2011. As Chair of New Music Brighton, Guy is currently helping develop an exciting choral project, involving the use of Sussex folk song in new compositions by Sussex based composers, whilst also working on a new piece for The Ireland Trio and revising some choral pieces for youth choir.
Alun studied at the Royal College of Music with Michael Winfield and in Freiburg, Germany with Heinz Holliger and now enjoys a varied career combining solo, chamber and orchestral playing. He is Principal Oboe with Glyndebourne on Tour and Garsington Opera, in addition to the Brighton Philharmonic, and has performed as Guest Principal Oboe with many leading orchestras including the Philharmonia, London Philharmonic, Royal Philharmonic, Orchestra of the Royal Opera House and Academy of St Martin in the Fields.
As a soloist Alun has broadcast extensively on BBC Radio 3, including the Young Artists Forum and a performance of the Mozart and Britten oboe quartets with the Ovid Ensemble. He also appears regularly with the Adderbury Ensemble and together they have recorded concertos by Albinoni and Marcello and Mozart’s Oboe quartet.
He has performed concertos with the London Festival, Brighton Philharmonic and Northern Chamber Orchestras, and as a chamber musician he has appeared at the Wigmore Hall, Bridgewater Hall, Manchester and at various festivals.
