Welcome to the Brighton Philharmonic Orchestra's 85th Concert Season

I am always very excited when we are contemplating the start of a new and exciting season of work. I am especially looking forward to this season as this is the first time you will hear the programme that Judith and I have been working on since her appointment. While looking forward, it is also a time of reflection as this is my twentieth year as Music Director and Principal Conductor. It has been an honour and a privilege to work with so many fine musicians and to see the orchestra grow in status and maturity before an increasingly loyal and discerning audience and I look forward to the future with the highest expectations.

Despite the financial constraints, I am convinced this season we have found a series of programmes that is as exciting and intriguing as you have come to expect. We have a wonderful roster of brilliant soloists, some new faces to Brighton, alongside musicians for whom you have shown so much enthusiasm in past seasons. I am sure that this season will provide many stimulating, vibrant and provocative moments alongside the sheer enjoyment which is such a feature of our musical events.

Every concert has some special feature worthy of mention, but highlights for me are the opening concert with Vasko Vassilev, Concert Master at the Royal Opera House, the Beethoven concerts around the change of the year and the Gordon Jacob Concerto with Peter Moore and Stephen Bell. As I say all of them are equally important listening and there is another party celebration planned for the final concert to include the Bagpipes (possible a first in the Dome) in an atmospheric and very amusing work by The Master of the Queen's Music.

Pre-concert interviews
Before every concert * you can join the BPO's resident host and programme-note writer Peter Back as he interviews some of the musicians involved in that day's concert. Many of the season's guest soloists and conductors will be joining Peter onstage, giving you the chance to hear about their life and music in their own words.

Pre-concert interviews take place onstage in the Brighton Dome Concert Hall at 1.45-2.15pm. Seating is unreserved (stalls only) and tickets are priced just £2.50.

Free programmes - online and at concerts
BPO programmes are free at every concert *, and available for download 48 hours in advance from the BPO's website. Each programme contains a listening guide, detailed programme notes, biographies of performers and more.

Online messageboards
Fancy yourself as a critic? Want to voice an opinion on a piece of music or a performer, or just want to hear what others have to say about a concert? Now you have your chance on the BPO's online messageboards - simply go to messageboards and have your say.
