The 2007-08 season opens with one of the most exotic and colourful ballets ever written: Stravinsky’s The Firebird. From its tender Lullaby to the powerful, pulse-quickening Infernal Dance it is one of the most spectacular of orchestral showpieces.

John Harle, widely regarded as the greatest classical saxophonist in the country, showcases the instrument’s delicate lyrical side in Debussy’s Rhapsodie and its virtuosity in Milhaud’s Scaramouche.

Three more short pieces by composers with a dramatic flair for orchestral texture frame the programme: Debussy’s sultry Prélude, the dazzling Capriccio Espagnol (by the man who taught orchestration to Stravinsky) and the magical Kikimora (by the composer who should have written The Firebird).
