Schubert
Symphony No.8 in B minor 'Unfinished'

Saint-Saens
Cello Concerto No.1 in A minor

Tchaikovsky
Symphony No.4 in F minor

Barry Wordsworth conductor
Gemma Rosefield cello

Begun but never finished, Schubert’s eighth symphony survives as two masterful movements — one strong, dark and brooding, one bright and consoling.

Tchaikovsky finished his fourth symphony, but wrestles with fate throughout it, as represented by the terrifying fanfares which open the piece and return to devastating effect in the middle of an otherwise joyous finale.

After winning the 2007 Pierre Fournier Award – probably the most prestigious of all cello prizes – Gemma Rosefield makes her first appearance with the BPO in a concerto full of freshness and vitality.
