Season Introduction |
THE BEETHOVEN SYMPHONIES: I - IV Sunday 25 November 2007 2.45pm Beethoven Debussy Handel Mozart Barry Wordsworth conductor It may be hard to imagine Beethoven as a young man but his first symphony, written in his twenties, shows his mischievous side, from its opening in the ‘wrong’ key to the finale’s joking scales. Mozart’s fortieth, by contrast, is one of the composer’s most serious – and most famous. Between these two great symphonies the BPO’s harpist, Emma Granger, takes centre stage. Debussy’s two dances for harp and string orchestra are by turns contemplative (the ‘sacred’) and opulent (the ‘profane’) and Handel’s Concerto marries together baroque ornateness with the natural elegance of the harp. Tickets £7 - £24 (Click here to book online) Jointly sponsored by Mr & Mrs Trevor Bolton, Richard Brooker and Brian Chattock 1.45pm Pre-concert interview onstage with members of the BPO (Tickets £2.50) Click here to download the printed programme for this concert |
