THE BEETHOVEN SYMPHONIES: I - IV

Sunday 25 November 2007 2.45pm
Brighton Dome Concert Hall

Beethoven
Symphony No.1 in C

Debussy
Danses Sacree et Profane

Handel
Harp Concerto in B flat

Mozart
Symphony No.40 in G minor

Barry Wordsworth conductor
Emma Granger harp

It may be hard to imagine Beethoven as a young man but his first symphony, written in his twenties, shows his mischievous side, from its opening in the ‘wrong’ key to the finale’s joking scales. Mozart’s fortieth, by contrast, is one of the composer’s most serious – and most famous.

Between these two great symphonies the BPO’s harpist, Emma Granger, takes centre stage. Debussy’s two dances for harp and string orchestra are by turns contemplative (the ‘sacred’) and opulent (the ‘profane’) and Handel’s Concerto marries together baroque ornateness with the natural elegance of the harp.
