Season Introduction |
Sunday 23 November 2008 2.45pm Szymanowski Chopin Tchaikovsky Barry Wordsworth conductor Tchaikovsky's highly tuneful, but surprisingly little-known, Symphony No.3, nicknamed 'Polish' because of its use of the Polish polonaise dance rhythm, is preceded by two pieces of true Polish heritage. Chopin combines virtuosity and poetic lyricism in his Piano Concerto No.2, for which Melvyn Tan, renowned for his interpretations of Chopin's piano music, makes a welcome return to the BPO. Szymanowski used authentic goral songs and dance melodies from the mountainous southern region of Poland as a basis for his ballet Harnasie ('The Highland Robbers'). Written in the 1920s Szymanowski's characteristically large and colourful orchestral palette transforms these folk melodies into high-energy, whirling dances.
