Piano Concerto in F

Stravinsky
Petrushka

Barry Wordsworth conductor
Artur Pizarro piano

Amidst a dazzling orchestral depiction of a Russian fair, the puppet Petrushka’s love for a ballerina ends in tragedy. Full of colourful characterisations, Stravinsky’s ballet music captures the sparkle, humour and pathos in the story so vividly that it needs no dancers!

Martin Butler’s association with the BPO as ‘Composer in Focus’ comes to a climax with the world premiere of From the Fairground of Dreams, written especially for the orchestra as a colourful concert-opener.

‘Pizarro dazzled and brought cries of ‘Bravo’ (The Argus, 2006) ‘with an effortless expertise’ (Mid Sussex Times, 2006), on his previous appearance with the BPO. The world-renowned pianist returns, keeping the carnival atmosphere of this concert alive with the jazz-inflected rhythms of Gershwin’s exuberant Concerto.
