Season Introduction |
Saturday 15 November 2008 7.30pm Dvorak Beethoven Tchaikovsky Stephen Bell conductor Stephen Bell, well known to Brighton audiences from his appearances at the BPO's traditional New Years' Eve concerts, opens this Saturday evening concert with three of Dvorak's characterful Slavonic Dances, pieces which capture the rustic energy of his Czech homeland. Beethoven's final piano concerto, the monumental 'Emperor', is played by a young Ukrainian pianist who has already won piano competitions in Moscow, Kiev and China and appeared at the Wigmore Hall and on BBC Radio 3. Whereas the finale of Beethoven's last piano concerto is heroic and triumphant, Tchaikovsky's final symphony ends with an achingly emotional declaration of personal tragedy and sadness. The 'Pathétique' nickname (meaning passionate and emotional) was soon attached to this masterpiece of personal expression of which Tchaikovsky said 'Without exaggeration, I have put my whole soul into this work.' Tickets £8 - £30 (Click here to book online) Alexei Grynyuk's appearance is supported by the Kirckman Concert Society 1.45pm Pre-concert interview onstage with Stephen Bell and Alexei Grynyuk (Tickets £2.50) Click here to download the printed programme for this concert |
