Season Introduction |
Sunday 15 March 2009 2.45pm Schubert Haydn Sallinen Haydn Ralf Gothóni piano* / conductor Finnish pianist, conductor, composer, teacher and writer, Ralf Gothóni is a past winner of one of its most valuable, most prestigious and most unusual prizes: the Gilmore Artist Award (awarded only every four years to an 'exceptional pianist who has both charisma and breadth of musicianship ... and can make a real impact on music' by an undercover audition process in which the nominated candidates never even know they are being considered for the prize!). Gothóni has championed the music of his home country, represented here by Aulis Sallinen's quirky tango, and won critical acclaim for his performances of Haydn's Piano Concerto at the BBC Proms and throughout the world. He opens this concert with Schubert's charmingly elegant fifth symphony and closes with one of Haydn's 'Paris' symphonies, nicknamed 'La Poule' ('The Hen') for the clucking oboe featured in its witty first movement. Tickets £8 - £30 (Click here to book online) 1.45pm Pre-concert interview onstage with Ralf Gothoni (Tickets £2.50) Click here to download the printed programme for this concert |
