Season Introduction |
Sunday 13 January 2008 2.45pm Weber Brahms Dvořák Barry Wordsworth conductor A work of truly symphonic stature, Brahms’ Violin Concerto casts the soloist in an almost operatic role, sometimes pitted against the orchestra, sometimes yielding gently to it. Here the lead is taken by French violinist Raphaël Oleg, a powerful performer and one of the few non-Russians ever to have been awarded the Gold Medal in the Moscow Tchaikovsky Competition. Dvořák’s sixth symphony shows influences from both Brahms and Beethoven, and yet he makes it entirely his own by the inclusion of a ‘furiant’, a fiery Czech dance. The overture from Euryanthe captures all the theatricality of Weber’s operas in a work bristling with drama. Tickets £7 - £24 (Click here to book online) Sponsored by Kathleen Ireland 1.45pm Pre-concert interview onstage with Raphaël Oleg (Tickets £2.50) Click here to download the printed programme for this concert |
