Brahms
Symphony No.1 in C minor

Paul Daniel conductor

Musical Director of English National Opera from 1997 to 2005, Principal Conductor of the West Australian Symphony Orchestra from 2009 and conductor of the 2005 Last Night of the Proms, guest conductor Paul Daniel makes a welcome return to the BPO with this concert of ‘firsts’ from two of the great symphonic masters.

‘The aristocrat of symphonists’, Sibelius’ first symphony shows him to be an entirely natural composer, the whole expansive work growing organically from a germ of an idea until it seems to encapsulate the very landscape of his beloved Finland.

Equally striking, Brahms by contrast keeps tight control of his musical ideas, forming them into majestic, almost architectural structures, building to a monumental finale.
