Ladies of Brighton Festival Chorus

In a concerto by one of the BPO’s former Presidents, Ralph Vaughan Williams (the 50th anniversary of whose death is commemorated this year), Graham Sibley shows that the tuba is equally as capable of showmanship as its smaller relations, from martial brilliance to lyrical tenderness and lively agility.

The new work which Martin Butler wrote as a concert-opener especially for the BPO receives its second performance and the season comes to a climactic close with Holst’s ‘Suite for large orchestra’. With its resplendant melodies, passages of shimmering beauty and raw energy, The Planets remains one of the best-loved of all orchestral showpieces.
