Season Introduction |
THE BEETHOVEN SYMPHONIES: V-VII Sunday 8 February 2009 2.45pm Bach Mozart Beethoven Barry Wordsworth harpsichord* / conductor Described by Wagner as 'the apotheosis of the dance', Beethoven';s seventh symphony balances grace and refinement with a dazzling energy in a work that the composer himself described as 'one of my best works'. Mozart's violin concertos are a combination of classical poise and elegance ideally suited to violinist Stephanie Gonley, Leader and soloist with the English Chamber Orchestra, whose playing was described by Gramophone magazine as 'polished and beautifully balanced'. Barry Wordsworth return to his roots as a harpsichordist as he directs the strings of the BPO and Principal Flautist Christine Messiter from his position at the keyboard for Bach's Orchestral Suite in B minor. A tour de force for the solo flute, the suite is a collection of dances (ending with the famous Badinerie), given a virtuosic twist. Tickets £8 - £30 (Click here to book online) Sponsored by Friends of the Philharmonic 1.45pm Pre-concert interview onstage with members of the BPO (Tickets £2.50) Click here to download the printed programme for this concert |
