President of the Brighton Philharmonic Orchestra from 1947-1958, Ralph Vaughan Williams is one of the country's most celebrated, most distinctive, composers. Commemorating the 50th anniversary of his death, this concert features three very different kinds of song by a composer adept at capturing beauty and poetry in music.

The Serenade to Music is a paean to music itself, to words from Shakespeare's The Merchant of Venice, performed here in its version for full chorus and orchestra as part of Brighton Festival Chorus' own 40th anniversary celebrations.

A solo violin takes flight over the orchestra in the birdsong of his most popular work, The Lark Ascending, played by BPO Leader John Bradbury, and the 'Sea Symphony' harnesses the power of orchestra, chorus, soloists and the evocative poetry of Walt Whitman to depict 'the sea itself' with its 'winds piping and blowing'.
