SUNDAY 4 OCTOBER 2009 2.45pm
Brighton Dome Concert Hall

Barry Wordsworth conductor
Vasko Vassilev violin

Borodin
Overture to Prince Igor [10']
Tchaikovsky
Violin Concerto [33']
Rachmaninov
Symphony No 2 in E minor [60']

Our season opens with a veritable feast of Russian music, the concert from Borodin promoting a strong national flavour in his melodic invention and almost certainly the most accomplished overture by a working surgeon / chemist. Our soloist in the much loved Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto is Bulgarian super- star Vasko Vassilev former student of the Moscow Conservatoire who came to study in London at eighteen and rapidly became one of the modern legends of the violin. Rachmaninov's Second Symphony formed part of the intensely productive period heralded by Rachmaninov's move to Dresden in 1907 and was an immediate success. It remains an audience favourite notable for the long strong melodic lines and the vitality and brilliance of the orchestration.

Concert in memory of Jackie Godfrey.
Sponsored by Julian Pelling and a further anonymous donor.
