Mendelssohn
Violin Concerto in E minor
A Midsummer Night's Dream

Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy, born 200 years ago, was a child prodigy to rival Mozart, but the works in this concert come from the last few years of his life. Despite this, the Violin Concerto in E minor exudes a youthful exuberance perfectly suited to Korean violinist Soojin Han, who at the age of twenty has already performed in major concert halls across Europe and won a number of international prizes, from the Royal Philharmonic Society's to Poland's Wieniawski International Violin Competition.

The Overture, Intermezzo, Nocturne, Scherzo and Wedding March from A Midsummer Night's Dream are some of Mendelssohn's best-loved music and have rightly taken their place alongside the Violin Concerto as classics. Yet the incidental music he wrote for Shakespeare's play also contains many other delights, including two songs for soloists and chorus, here sung by the talented Brighton Festival Youth Choir (prize winners at the 2007 Verona International Choir Competition).

Actress Joanna David, well known for her appearances in television costume dramas such as Rebecca and Pride and Prejudice, takes us through the drama of a piece that she herself chose as one of her 'Private Passions' in the programme of that name on BBC Radio 3.
